An all new classifieds listing service has begun and it's called SList (SecondList). Touted as the 'Craigslist' of Second Life, SList features options for display ads, and many categories for classifieds listings (including an Adult area)
The site is running a promotion during its early launch so contact them now and get listed! (the rules are very simple: ads expire after one week, but you can certainly post them repeatedly and have a lot of fun mixing up the various ads/listings you run) Check out SList!

Open Call for GFAC 2012: Groups for Adult Communities: Celebrating Groups in Second Life

Do you run an SL Group? Thinking of starting a new group? GFAC is for you!
GFAC features one of SL's most important and effective phenomena: Groups.

This convention-style event will run early 2012 and give Groups booth space for displays and stage time for presentations. There will be resources to help Groups and an extra emphasis on New Groups, too.

GFAC will be on Adult land, so age verification will be required to participate and attend. Any groups that may be appreciated by adults will be eligible, including but not limited to, A-rated content. (we are looking for diversity!) Groups designed to appeal to underage residents will not be allowed. Other guidelines may apply.

Patrick Thorkveld gave me a sneak peek at the new White Tiger Orientation Area for the First Responder Sim. He said, "Treacle Darlandes set it up in conjunction with us and LL...it's the orientation area for training people who come into SL so they have skills necessary for First Responder training." Iso Huet, art and design director for First Responder said, "This is an important project. Hopefully there will be lives saved out of it. Wouldn't that be something?! Learn in SL.. save lives in RL." The area is open for visitors now.

Event Review: Clown Dolls Forever Film Premier

“Clown Dolls Forever” is a glorious romp through the possibilities and potentialities of Second Life – the tools, collaborative opportunities and technical aspects – a colourful fun-fest with a serious message at its heart.

The story is complex, the action is unrelenting. It blends intimate voice sequences with stagey circus performances, shoot-outs, chases, and technicolour sci-fi transformations. Filmed entirely within a purpose-built city set, and using Hollywood-style multiple shot sequences, the machinima took 367 hours over 40 days to complete, used 30 actors, 5 voice actors and cost the princely sum of $L300 to produce.

The movie was “shot, chopped and scored” by Ambrosia Lanley, and this reveals a lot about her high-octane style and audacious approach to film-making in SL. Caylee Sabra wrote the screenplay from Ambrosia’s basic ideas - women as superheroes, finding a family, and working together to save the day. Taking the world-wide problem of child abduction as a central theme is courageous and is sure to resonate with many viewers.

This movie is also likely to inspire budding machinima producers as well. Ambrosia has only been making machinima in SL since March 2010, is completely self-taught and has mastered all aspects of production, direction, casting, set building, camerawork and editing through patient practice and frustrating trial and error. However, with 21 films under her belt already, another in production and “Clown Dolls 2” in the pipeline, the rewards Ambrosia gets in terms of fun, friendship and a creative frisson are apparent to anyone.

What’s so revolutionary about a breeding dragon, one might ask? Well, the BattleBeast Breedables dragons don’t JUST produce off-spring, eat, interact, and look amazing in accessories... (although they DO look amazing in accessories), the Beasts battle! Gamers will appreciate that XP, Levels are earned through battle. Stamina, strength and speed are a blend of Nature and Nuture: Breeding and Battle. As you breed your dragon traits to produce the best possible (“Nature”), the dragon also gains through battle (“Nurture”).

“Where in Second Life is the Concert?” Hunt
On Feb 4th, 2012 from 6pm - 8pm SLT for the first time ever, Mankind Tracer & The Follow will be performing back to back live video concerts at a SECRET location following a 2 week long hunt around Second Life. The hunt will run Jan. 20th through Feb 3rd.
♬ Hunt info:
We will be limiting the hunt to 50 participating locations to keep the hunt small and manageable for existing and new fans. Often times, hunts are excessive, leading people to give up and not visit all participating locations. We are purposefully keeping this hunt on the smaller side and the items hidden, but not too difficult. The idea is that people do finish the hunt and equally as important, spend time in your stores.
REQUIRED: Each store will need to provide a quality freebie.

As a rare back to back line up, this should prove to be one of the year’s most well attended concert as both Mankind and The Follow are known to pack venues at their own individual shows.

The hunt will be featured in the SL Destination Guide and on Mankind Tracer’s and The Follow’s website(s) and blog(s). Promotions will also be strategically placed on Facebook, Twitter, Second Friends and throughout Second Life, giving the event combined promotion to over 500K+ unique users. To be one of only 50 participating locations we are allowing, you will need to agree to have a quality freebie, use our hunt receptacle and allow a kiosk to be placed at your location - which will also be used for promoting the hunt. Kiosks will be scripted to keep track of hunt analytics, therefore scripts will need to be permitted at your location by having them set to “ON”, or the kiosk will need to be set to your Land Group. Order of hunt locations will be in order of sign up for participation. (Please see the information below for who to contact about PARTICIPATION FEES.)
The deadline to be a hunt location is Jan. 13, 2012.

As we head into the new year, I’d like to share some highlights from 2011, as well as a glimpse of what’s to come in 2012.

First, if you haven’t already, I hope you will explore our recently launched Linden Realms, the Lab's first-ever game prototype. For newbies, it is a very simple way to earn L$, so hop on over and start collecting gems.

One of the key goals of Linden Realms was to learn more about what tools Residents could use to develop richer experiences in Second Life — and boy, did we learn a lot! In Q1 2012 , we will be releasing new tools used to develop Linden Realms, which will allow Residents to create even richer original experiences in Second Life. To prevent abuse of these tools, we will introduce a "creators" program in which verified members will be given access to these very powerful capabilities.

In 2011, we also made strides to improve usability in Second Life. We launched a new version of the Viewer, which allows you to customize the user interface for a more flexible workspace with drag-and-drop buttons, among other key new features. The new Viewer also makes it easier for new Residents to discover essential, basic functions — so, with the simple click of a button, you can change your appearance, go to a new location, find inworld merchants or head on over to the Second Life Marketplace.

Speaking of customization, since we deployed Mesh earlier this year, we’ve seen more than a 16 percent adoption rate. I expect this to continue to grow at a strong pace as more and more Residents take advantage of all the features available to allow you explore Second Life and create even more engaging, exciting experiences.

This past year, we also improved the customer experience with expanded Premium subscription benefits that include virtual gifts, as well as exclusive areas where you can go and create. One of the other benefits of being a Premium member is ownership of a Linden Home, which I’m pleased to report has reached an historic high. For those of you who have enjoyed owning a Linden Home and are looking for a little more real estate, you can check out what is available on the Second Life Land Store and through private-estate purchases and rentals found through Second Life Search. In 2012, you can expect to see more value added to Premium in the form of additional features and content. If you are not yet a Premium member, you can sign up here!

In 2012, the primary engineering focus of Q1 will be server side performance and fixing bugs. In fact, you may have noticed one upgrade deployed this week which should reduce the number of restarts and increase performance for all regions. This kind of work makes for a poor headline, but has enormous payoff for the customer experience. We will also continue to invest in and focus on our customer support, reducing response times and increasing satisfaction.

For landowners, existing land tier pricing will not go up in 2012. In addition, our service and quality focus in 2012 also means that we will be delivering features and policies that we believe will significantly assist merchants and landowners in running a business more profitably.

For creators our first new feature for 2012 will be pathfinding. Because worlds feel most vibrant when they are full of life, one of our next focuses for Second Life is the ability to make high-quality “life” within it. So in 2012, we will be rolling out more advanced features that will allow the creation of artificial life and artificial people to be much smoother. For starters, in Q1, we'll unveil a new, robust pathfinding system that will allow objects to intelligently navigate around the world while avoiding obstacles. Combined with the tools from Linden Realms this will make the polished creation of full MMORPG’s or people/animal simulators within Second Life easier and of high quality.

In addition to delivering new features and increasing our support for Second Life, we will be launching some completely different products next year not related to Second Life. Some of them will be very experimental, but all will fit within our company’s proud history of enabling creativity, which I hope may interest some of you.

Bloggers will be given releases that cannot be posted until the beginning of the new year so you must be able to understand how to post date on your blogsite (wordpress, blogspot, etc) and you must display exceptional styling skills as these designs will require very high fashion accessorising.

Ice Sculpture Contest
Information and Rules
Avalon Town invites all SL artists to embrace the season and create your own virtual ice sculpture. Imagine you are given a 10x20 block of ice and bring out what you see in that block.
We will be accepting submissions starting January 1st, entry deadline January 5th with a release part on Friday, January 6th at 7pm SLT. The sculptures will be on display in the Avalon Art District throughout January and open to public voting.
A closing party on Saturday, January 28th at 7pm SLT will unveil the public vote winners and the winners of an avalon managers vote.
Public Vote Award:
3rd place: $1000L
2nd place: $2000L
1st place: $3000L
Managers' Choice Award
$5000L
Contest Rules:
1.) Limit 1 entry per artist
2.) Please keep the size of the work within a 10m diameter and 20m height
3.) Prim limit 50 prims
4.) Prims, sculpts and mesh are permitted
5.) Scripts are allowed within reason, please consider sim performance
6.) Bots are not permitted
7.) Avalon Sims are rated moderate, please submit appropriate works.
8.) Mod and copy rights are optional, but works should allow transfer for auction purposes.
9.) Avalon Town management reserves the right to turn down any entry for any reason.
10.) Staff and management of Avalon, Avalon Art District and Citrus Virtual are prohibited from entry.

The Torch SL Guide
The Torch SL Guide is a blog and Magazine for newcomers that began in January 2011. Created by Izzie Morgan (KennieM Resident) And Morphman DeClaun (Morphman Resident), the Torch SLG's main objective is to help newcomers survive and have a positive experience in the vast virtual world of Second Life.
The Torch SL Guide, originally called Izzie Morgan's SL Survival Guide, started as a blog on blogging site, Wordpress.com and featured reviews of Second Life locations and stores, gaining 772 views in the first month. Since its appearance it has been catering to the newcomer and veteran population and has now over 120 000 views on the blog, averaging between 1 750 and 3 000 views per day. The Torch SL Guide has had a staff of 22 active members, including writers, builders, and models.
The Torch SL Guide has been affiliated with other Second Life companies and businesses such as Fashion Designers Kara Dresler (owner of K Code), Sarah Huntress (owner of xXxtreme) , Dysturbed Sin (owner of Gothic and cyber clothing store +DV8+) and Syane & Systi Crane (owners of cyber inspired store [sYs]). It has also been associated with several Clubs, such as Ohana Rock Club, Heroes & Villains, 7734 Cub and Ruins.
The Torch SL Guide is also an elite member of the Magazine Writers Guide Association, a Second Life organisation that caters for magazine writers, blogs, photographers and other members of the media industry within Second Life.

What will the Torch SL Guide do?
The Torch SL Guide produces a series of articles using real life publishing tools for residents in-world. Articles will be split into sections that will help newcomers to Second Life find their way through the grid. They are:

Fashion and Freebies: Many newcomers come to Second Life with no currency, this is noted by designers and SL businesses alike. Many distribute free clothing, accessories, and even Linden dollars (the currency of Second Life) to customers as a way of increasing their customer base. New residents can use this to their advantage by gaining freebies as well as becoming valued customers of these stores. Fashion and Freebies also introduces new residents to Second Life's Fashion Industry and the clothing designs of SL's finest designers. This could help those who are interested in fashion to find out more about the Fashion and Model industry that has been thriving in Second Life ever since clothes were created on the grid.

Newbie Advice: This allows the older residents (or veterans) of Second Life to share their insights, advice and experiences with the new residents. This section of the Torch SLG will not only give older residents a voice, but allows new residents to ask questions and seek advice. Newbie Advice can be used as a teaching session, complete with a ‘How to...’ corner where new residents can submit their questions to be answered.

SL Destination: There are so many amazing places that have been created in the Second Life Grid. Second Life Destination, looks at these amazing places, showing newcomers the wonders they contain. These include clubs and other interactive destinations that would be of interest to new residents. This section will introduce new residents to the exploration side of SL. A Helpin’ Hand is the charity section of SL Destinations, showing new residents the charities that have a home in the Grid.

Culture: There are many cultures that have been created in Second Life, or have been transferred from Real Life. This section will explore these different cultures and explain how they play an important part of Second Life as well as help new residents to find their place in our SL community. These include, music, art, education, religion as well as other less orthodox cultures like dolly, vampire and steampunk.

What is the Torch SL Guide’s target audience and how will it be targetted?
The Torch SL Guide will be targeting the new residents of Second Life, helping them to come to terms with their fresh ‘life start’. This will be achieved by showing that which they can achieve within SL and what is open to them. We will give them valuable information that will help them settle in, while opening the doors of opportunity to them.

Where would we like to see the Torch SL Guide in the long term?
We would like to be a good source of information for the newcomers of Second Life as well as a connection between SL businesses and the newcomer population.
