Artathon Benefit Auction today @4pm

Group Notice From: Aaliya Munro

                 SPONSORED BY
                -PETABLE PETS-
           -THE DARK PROJECT-

You and a guest are invited to the Artathon 2.0  live benefit art auction PARTY of all the remaining originals and inworld versions of the artworks Winter Nightfire and Filthy Fluno created during the 2010 SLCC at the Park Plaza Hotel in Boston.  Please join us for an evening of art, fun, networking and nonprofit awareness!

We will have a live RL/SL auction, live music, amazing dj'ing with Lynda Ultsch and an art talk by Winter Nightfire and Filthy Fluno.  Proceeds from the art auction are donated to Virtual Ability INC, a 501c3 organization.  Learn more about VA at

The 2010 Second Life Community Convention (SLCC), held in Boston, Massachusetts, brought some of the most creative and innovative metaversatile people from around the globe together for 3 days of fun, performances, education, networking, and online virtual culture. Artists Jeffrey Lipsky (a.k.a. Filthy Fluno) and C.J. Ross (a.k.a. Winter Nightfire) captured all the sights and sounds of the convention with their paints and pastels!

From Ham Rambler's Blarney Stoned Musician Showcase to Philip Rosedale's keynote address, Winter and Filthy got a front row seat to make artworks that celebrated the essence of each event. They were even spotted at the late night secret Glass Room afterparty with their sharpies and pastels! The Artathon 2.0 exhibit is a collection of all the artworks created at the SLCC in Boston's Park Plaza Hotel from August 13th to the 15th. Proceeds of the sales of these artworks will be donated to Virtual Ability, Inc.

Throughout the Summer and Fall of 2010, the Artathon 2.0 exhibit will be hosted by dozens of galleries and museums across the metaverse with Nightfire and Fluno sharing a "behind the scenes" presentation of what goes into creating an event and exhibit like this.

Currently, the exhibit's home is at Artropolis but more virtual venues are lining up in the next few months.

The Artathon 2.0 project would not have been possible without the support of our amazing sponsors,, Petable Pets, and The Dark Project. We all believe that the combined power of art, online virtual worlds, and metaverse entrepeneurs can be harnessed to raise awareness and funds for nonprofit organizations like Virtual Ability INC.

In 2009, Fluno and Nightfire's Artathon at SLCC in San Francisco raised more than $1,000 USD for the nonprofit Virtual Ability, Inc. Thousands of artists and art enthusiasts from around the world watched online and in person as Fluno and Nightfire created artworks on the spot and uploaded them into the virtual world of Second Life.

2009 Opening  Reception and Check Ceremony:

Members of Virtual Ability had this to say about the first Artathon:

“Watching Filthy and Winter create was thrilling!” said Treasure Ballinger, president of the deaf and hearing-impaired group Cape Able. Ballinger said that the creative process immortalized the event in abstract. “Winter just dropped to the floor in front of us and began to draw. Before we knew it, there we were, her abstract creation taking on a life of its own.” Ballinger said that the creation was “impressive and beautiful to watch.”

“Her talent is amazing, and apparently at her fingertips,” said Ballinger. “She didn't even have to stop and think about it!”

“Winter snagged us as Treasure wheeled me into the ballroom,” said Virtual Ability president Gentle Heron. “We were barely inside the door when her smiling face and smudged fingers invited us to pose for a portrait. I had never seen Winter's work before, so I didn't know what to expect. She used colors, lines, and block shapes to express our personalities as she uncovered them in casual conversation. All the while she was sketching away on the floor, risking trampling by the partying crowds. Winter obviously enjoys her work, and it shows in her speech as well as her art. Hugs to you, Winter, and thanks for the portrait!”

About the Artists:

Winter Nightfire (a.k.a. C.J. Ross) is a self-taught painter from San Francisco, California. Her exposure to Abstract Expressionism began at age 16 in the North Beach neighborhood at Caffe Trieste, where she befriended her mentor, the noted Beat artist Jack Hirschman and many other outsider artsts. She exhibited her first painting at a group show with her mentors in 2001 at age 24, and she has been showing solo at venues across San Francisco ever since.

In 2006, Nightfire took her work on the road, traveling on a west coast tour with Tha Musemeant, an acid-folk quartet out of Nothern New Mexico. Painting live has since become one of Nightfire's passions, and she has frequented music venues across San Francisco with paint "on hand." creating reflections in pigment of the scenes and sounds around her.

"The painting is the boss," explains Nightfire. "It tells me what it needs to become a story, movement by movement, gesture by gesture. My job as the painter is to listen visually and to give the evolving work what it asks me to provide. These lines, shapes, and colors merely represent transcriptions of my conversations with space."

Jeffrey Lipsky (a.k.a. Filthy Fluno) is an artist living in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, who makes abstract narrative paintings and drawings. His artwork is exhibited and collected by galleries, museums, and individuals from around the world. He has been the focus of dozens of articles in print and on the web such as The New York Times Magazine, Art Calendar Magazine, Artnet, , The Boston Globe, , The Brooklyn Rail, Art Magazine Germany, and many other publications.

Lipsky also specializes in using online virtual world and social networking technologies to connect to international audiences, fundraise for nonprofits, find new marketplaces, and inspire local arts communities. In 2006, Lipsky became the founder and manager of one of the world's premier online artist communities called Artropolis in Second Life. In 2007, Lipsky opened CounterpART Gallery in Lowell, Massachusetts, which is dedicated to the mixed reality mash-up of contemporary art, virtual culture, new media, and live music.

Lipsky graduated from Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, Massachusetts, with a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in 1999. He is the former executive director of Munroe Center for the Arts, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) arts organization specializing in arts education and studio spaces that serve the community at large. Lipsky's style has been compared to Kandinsky, Basquiat, Matisse, and Dove. For more information, please email or visit , and

Mankind Tracer soon to break SL World record !

Group Notice From: Kalli Birman

On October 3rd, Mankind Tracer will be holding the largest ever multi sim concert event in Second Life's history.

Over the past few years, Mankind Tracer, SL's most recognized live performer, has held his Peace, Love & Belief Concerts, with the last PLB III on 34 different sims. During PLB III, Mankind played a few songs at each venue, jumping from sim to sim for over 6 hours straight. While this is still the recognized record for most simultaneous sims, Mankind will be going for 50 sims at Peace, Love & Belief IV.

The major difference this year is that PLB IV will be a Live Video Concert. The concert is planned to last for three straight hours. There will also be a live audio stream just in case residents don't have the ability to see video. Mankind will stream his live show across SL via the new "stage screen" and thus will not need to jump sims. This year, there will still be the Land Mark Board which, as with all previous PLB Events, will clearly display the names of all participating venues/sims and each will be clickable to their respective LM's.

The idea of Peace, Love  & Belief is something Mankind Tracer offers all attendees at his shows and has been doing so for well over three and a half years since he first started performing. In Mankind's own word's, "I wish you peace in your minds, love in your hearts and belief in the generosity and the goodness of the people that share the world with us." Millions of people have likely heard his message and his hopes are to spread his message even further.

Participating venues will be provided with a "Package" which will include all setup material including the video screen, audio stream info, the LM Board, promotional material and an instruction notecard for setup. You will need to place the provided texture in your land settings under "Media Texture".

During his long time performing in SL, Mankind Tracer has won many prestigious awards, performed countless charitable events for both large and personal causes and he has released 3 SL CD's which have seen tremendous success in SL. His concerts are usually packed with most being driven by audience requests and of course his truly amazing and insightful original music. In the saturated live music scene, Mankind Tracer, still after all these years, remains the most widely recognized SL live performer. He is the "goto guy" to help launch the Linden Labs' events like the SL Birthday parties and Burning Life events. Through all of his success, Mankind Tracer remains a kind and generous man and all around nice guy!

Be sure to get on board this historic SL Event as many SL and RL eyes will be watching this one!

• Event Promotion

Banners advertising the event will be placed all around SL, on Second Friends, FaceBook events, MySpace, Reverb Nation, SL Radio Station and more.

• Sponsorship

If you are a business in SL and would like to sponsor the event, there are only 10 spots available. Sponsors will have a square image embedded onto the LM board which will be placed at all participating venues offering great exposure. Sponsor ads will also be clickable to a LM of your choice.

Those who choose to sponsor the event will also be offered a discounted ad rate for one month on Second Friends, the Social Networking Website for SL residents only, created by  Mankind Tracer:

• Contact

If you would like to be part of this historic SL Event, either by carrying the stream or by sponsoring the event, please contact Mankind Tracer, Kalli Birman or Roos Tomsen to get further info as soon as you can. There is only room for 50 venues/sims.

Frank Lloyd Wright Virtual Museum Gets Non-Profit Status

Group Notice From: Rosalie Oldrich

The FLWVM is very proud to announce that the IRS has granted us non profit status - all donations from last December and going forward will be tax deductible.    We are growing and changing and hope you will come to visit.

Also pleased to announce that Pathfinder Lester has joined our board of directors.

Please see our press release below.

Rosalie Oldrich
FLWVM Board of Directors

Press Release:

For Immediate Release
21 August 2010

We are pleased to announce that Virtual Museums Inc.— the governing body of the Frank Lloyd Wright Virtual Museum (FLWVM)— has been awarded 501(c)3 Non-Profit status by the United States Internal Revenue Service, retroactive from the date of application in December 2009.  “I am literally in tears of joy here—no kidding;” exclaimed Board Member and former Assistant Director Rosalie Oldrich, who spearheaded the effort for non-profit status. “This means that all contributions given to the museum in 2010 are tax deductible!”

This status will also reduce our tier payments to Linden Labs by 50%.  This enables the museum to focus on a capital campaign, which in turn will allow for future expansion of the already popular museum on the Second Life™ grid.

“We are of course thrilled by this news,” said FLWVM Board Chairman Ethan Westland,” and it couldn’t come at a better time, as we have launched a capital campaign to add another region.”

The museum, which operates within a licensing agreement with the RL Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, will be working closely with the Wright archives to realize new virtual reproductions of Wright’s most famous buildings.  Up to this point, several have been built by museum staff, friends and external partners, and some had generously been on long-term loan to the museum.  “While we appreciate everything our previous builders have done, we are also excited to move forward with new virtual replicas that are crafted in close coordination with the RL organization.”

We give much of the credit for this development to former museum CEO, Frey Bravin, a passionate Wright enthusiast whose vision saw the museum through its first year.  His vision is so grand, in fact, that he has moved on to start an exciting new endeavor: the Museum of American Architecture. The staff and board wish him all the best in this new endeavor.  Former operations director and well-respected artist Curt Kongo has stepped in as interim CEO.  A formal search for a new CEO will begin shortly.

The museum is also thrilled to announce that Pathfinder Lester (formerly Linden) has joined our Board of Directors.  Extremely well-respected in the education and creative communities, path brings with him a wealth of experience, as well as in-depth knowledge of Linden Labs, which will rather fittingly help the museum pave its path to the future.

We are also pleased to welcome several new staff members to the museum.  “We’ve chosen Gina Broono as our new Museum Curator, and couldn’t be happier,” said Westland.  “Gina is an RL architect with a passion for Wright, and has experience working in museums such as the Metropolitan  in New York City.  She brings a rich educational background —something the Foundation is keen for us to focus on.”

Additionally, Terra Tepper has been promoted to Operations Director.  Anyone who has seen her stunning works, including the museum’s Loren B. Pope residence, knows she is the perfect woman for the job.

Other new staff members include Ocean Wade as Director of Education, Jadyn Firehawk as Lecture Series Coordinator, and Snow Scarmon as Archivist/Collections Manager.

While a celebration will be announced shortly, the museum welcomes your support now with your tax-deductible contributions, and by asking you to volunteer to help us out as we grow.  If you are a builder with a passion for Wright, definitely get in touch with us!  Broono and Tepper are currently drafting a building plan for future museum development alongside Board Member Ethos Erlanger—builder of the FLWVM’s Fallingwater—and are looking for more creative minds!

For more information on these exciting developments, please contact Farqot Gustafson, Director of Communications for the museum.  You can visit the FLWVM in world at: and our website

The Frank Lloyd Wright Museum of Second Life engages the public in educational and aesthetic experiences to foster an appreciation of architecture, design and the legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Frank Lloyd Wright Museum of Second Life will be a multi-disciplinary center for education, scholarship, debate and research committed to exposing and promoting the works, ideas, and innovative spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright for the benefit of all members of Second Life worldwide.

Liza Veliz reports on Emerald mess, read about it here!

Group Notice From: Liza Veliz

Cliff's notes of the whole situation, an old sl friend of sl reporter Liza Veliz

Companion Videos:

== Datamine Incident ==

Fractured collected avatar / ip combinations using scripted objects in the Emerald Point sim and the Modular Systems / Emerald RegAPI site in a central "Datamine". This was used to determine who was whose alt account and they he had created a web application that allowed him to locate any of said users on the globe with a margin of error of about 200 miles. Various emerald devs had access to this system, and they used it regularly.

Phox and Fractured stalked and hacked the third party who discovered the Datamine (a developer of a non-TOS compliant viewer like them.) They hacked his voice account so he would not be able to use SL Voice, and stalked him to a randomly sim when nobody had map rights. The sim was chosen and the user logged on when the third party found out Fractured had a "surprise" waiting for him. Phox and Fractured confronted the third party, saying they knew who he was and they'd called his house. He was apparently a student on financial aid and was living with his mother. Phox stated in private that he intended to steal the third party's computer so he couldn't mess with them again.

Fractured sends around the chatlog to people, laughing about how they had trolled the third party.

It turned out not to be the third party, and they had been harassing a random person.

The third party called Fractured at his house, to let him know that he knew all about the "datamine", and the information regarding it would be publicly released. Eventually an agreement was reached with Fractured that only information regarding who used the "Datamine" and who was in it, not any identifying information, would be released to the public so long as the datamine was removed from his servers.

Fractured apparently removes the datamine and associated code, the list of users who were in the datamine is posted on the Alphaville Herald.

== EmKDU Incident ==

Phox and Fractured attempted to get the third party's internet disconnected (again, a common tactic of their also used on Neil,) but were unsuccessful. Phox still believes he was successful and has gloated about it to numerous people.

Fractured and several other Emerald devs also worked on the Onyx project, a malicious viewer under the guise of a project to find security holes in SL. It was based on a client of Fractured's that had been banned in the past, along with Emerald. This client was used to harass and stalk others when they saw fit. They claimed it wasn't malicious, and was used for research only. The old source code was leaked. They claimed that it didn't have any of those features anymore and the viewer was just for research. Much more recent source code was leaked, and they didn't say much of anything, but the Onyx site was taken offline. They started hiding that they were using Onyx by spoofing their tag and channel name to be the same as Emerald's, but there were still a few pieces they forgot that identified it.

Someone found out a library the ModSys team had made was being used to leak information about Emerald users. It could be viewed by anyone who knew how to decrypt the message, and the source code to the library was not open to public scrutiny. The message was decrypted by others, using custom software, and it turned out that one was able to determine what version of Emerald they were using, and in some cases, what their username on their computer was. This is dangerous, because the information can be used to pinpoint who a user is in real life if their username on their computer is the same as their real name. It also enabled people to determine who was and was not using Onyx, along with several other unwitting Emerald derivatives.

They claimed they removed this info after several Emerald devs questioned them about it, and they promptly changed the encryption used on the message that was sent out. The message was decrypted again, and it turned out that the majority of the contents were the same, despite their claims. It was changed a third time, and hasn't been decrypted yet.

A core emerald dev decided to leave

One ex-Linden, Qarl decided to join.

== DDoS incident ==

This was all documented by the third party. Fractured thought it would be funny (apparently while he was drunk?) to add hidden frames to the emerald login screen that would load content from said third party's website (which they had stated numerous times was a website hosting malicious software,) and overload the third-party's server with requests every time someone logged into Emerald. The third party found out about it, saying he didn't really care if they wanted to attack him, but to not use their own users as tools to do it. The way the website was loaded, the third party's website could have launched exploits infecting the computers of anyone logging into Emerald, change their login location, or crash their computer.

Soft Linden, head of Security for LL, railed on the Emerald team in the opensource-dev mailing list.

Two core devs left.

Arabella then made an official post about the incident, whitewashing it by saying it was only one developer, who was disciplined, and that they were merely boasting about their traffic to the third party.

Another ex-linden, Data, joined.

In an audio recording, it was determined that they had known that Fractured may be adding the code to the login page before he had even done it, and nothing was done about it until someone complained. Arabella knew it was a lot more than just boasting about traffic, but didn't want to say so, as not to "scare the users". All mention of it on their forums of blog comments was deleted until they made the official response. Arabella thinks very carefully about whether or not to censor a comment from YET ANOTHER ex-linden, Pathfinder, that was less than complimentary of what they were doing to their own users. She and others censored the majority of other comments and posts that did not agree with what they had said in the original post.

== Aftermath ==

Emerald is removed from the Third Party Viewer List.

Fractured steps down from the leader of Emerald, and leaves Arabella in his place. Phox remains.

Liza Veliz,press pass reporter

Simplexity-Blow.Your. Mind.- Art Video event invite for Sunday!

Group Notice From: Persia Bravin

Immersive art, sound and video installation by Thoth Jantzen

Opens Sunday 22nd August @ 3pm SLT

s i m p l e x i t y is the latest creation from multimedia artist Thoth Jantzen and combines a heady mix of  video, prim sculpture and some distinctive texturing techniques that will take you on a trip through sound and space.

Some have called it ‘You Tube’ on steroids with a massive dose of LSD while others who have seen the advance preview have called it ‘a huge, legal trip’.

For certain, this new build is pushing the boundaries of how we perceive sound and visuals in virtual worlds and is destined to become a must see location in SL this year.

Explore labyrinths full of sound and color, slide down fractal spirals or sit and relax on the chairs with full sim viewing options.   <>

!!!!!! HEALTH WARNING !!!!!!

.  EPILEPSY WARNING: If you have epilepsy or otherwise are adversely affected by rapidly flashing lights and changing colors, this exhibit isn't good for you -- seriously!  DO NOT enable your media here (it does look pretty nice without the media playing, though).  Disable streaming media in your EDIT/PREFERENCES menu before continuing - or leave - we don't want anyone harmed here!

Press Information

Creator: Thoth Jantzen

Press Enquiries: Persia Bravin

About the creator:

Thoth Jantzen is an avatar who's been in SL for just shy of 4 years.  He specializes in building multi-media based immersive environments and 'media-active sculpture'.  His work has been featured at NMC/Ars Simulacra, the CARP/Diabolus art space, and with the Caerleon Art Collective as well as at some real-world exhibits, including the Virtual Art Initiative and the "How We Play" exhibition at the Neutral Ground gallery for contemporary art.  When he's not busy messing with your mind aurally and visually, he likes to do it through participation in discussions about philosophy and science, and he's been active as a member, advisor, and organizer in a number of SL educational, science, philosophy, and art communities.

Statement on build by Thoth Jantzen:

“Enjoy the experience!  When you arrive, click the "play" button in your media controller, and explore - that's it!  We do suggest first trying out the seating pads in the entry area (make sure your media's working, then point and click to get on, then hit ESC two times.  When you're done, just click 'stand up' to get off) but there's no real path you must follow - just go where you like!  We do suggest you take your time and look around - there's a LOT to see and experience - but you can do it at your own pace in whatever order you wish.  And, of course, you're always welcome to return!  To enter the main build, just point and click on the portal pool in the centre of the entry area. The name of this build derives from what you get when 'complexity' emerges from 'simplicity' -- I hope its obvious!”

Technical Details

The s i m p l e x i t y experience relies heavily on streaming media, and therefore requires the viewer to have QuickTime installed plus media streaming enabled in edit/preferences for maximum enjoyment.

On arrival, please take a few moments to read the welcome notice to fully enjoy the very best parts of this unique installation.

See you there Sunday!

Mankind Tracer Performs at 5 pm @ Grand Opening of the Galaxy Isle

Group Notice From: Kalli Birman

Mankind Tracer To Perform for Grand Opening of Galaxy Isle

On Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at 5pm slt Mankind Tracer will perform live to raise awareness for Galaxy Isle. Mankind Tracer has been labeled "Second Life's Premiere Rock Performer" for good reason. For over three and a half years,Mankind Tracer has stood above most, providing more than just an amazing voice and guitar skills. Most of his shows are driven by audience requests and participation, which adds an abundance of fun to every concert, making each one a unique experience! With his reintroduction of Live Video Concerts, he is poised to continue his long time standing as SL's most recognized live performer.

Galaxy Isle was built with the intent of privately bringing hospitalized individuals with mentors into SL to take advantage of the healing power of amusement and learning that can take place in this virtual space. To that end, Galaxy Isle is host to over 30 species of animals in a floating-island wildlife park suspended over a mature event space which is regularly filled with some of SL's most recognizable talent in an effort to spread awareness of the power of virtual worlds on those in need of healing and hopefully inspire its visitors to get involved locally with similar initiatives that breathe a new life, a SecondLife into the minds and hearts of people in pain.
